Business in Blackfriars
Blackfriars is a major transportation gateway to the City of London's financial and legal district. The area is home to Blackfriars station, Blackfriars Millennium Pier and several stations served by the London Underground. Thanks to its location in the City, many of the area's businesses are active in the legal and accountancy sectors.
There are also several major corporate offices in and around the Blackfriars area, including the London offices of BNY Mellon. The Mellon Financial Centre on Queen Victoria Street is also the home of BNY Mellon's EMEA Innovation Centre, which brings together start-ups and developers as well as industry experts and researchers to support the financial institution's clients. JP Morgan also has offices in the former City of London School's historic building.
Office Buildings in Blackfriars
One of the landmark office buildings in Blackfriars is Unilever House. The Grade II listed building is located on New Bridge Street. Its curved frontage is designed in the neoclassical Art Deco style. Built on the site of Henry VIII's residence at Bridewell Palace, the building's main tenants include Unilever, Bristows and the Royal Mail. Tallis House is a refurbished business centre with serviced offices. Located at 2 Tallis Street, the offices are south of Fleet Street and close to Blackfriars and City Thameslink stations. Amenities include a business lounge, secure underground parking, and conference rooms. Located on the south bank of the Thames, 240 Blackfriars is a 19-storey tower with 11,000 square feet of modern offices. Tenants are treated to river views and have access to good transport connections.
At 2 Puddle Dock is Mermaid House, the home of HMV's corporate headquarters. The building also houses serviced offices next to Blackfriars rail station and close to Mansion House tube station. It is also the site of The Mermaid Conference & Events Centre.
Blackfriars in the City of London gets its name from Black Frere, which refers to the French word for brother ('frère') and the black cappa worn by Dominican Friars that moved into the Holborn in 1276. The order's priory in the area was used for meetings of Parliament and the Privy Council as well as a divorce hearing for Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in 1529 before it was closed in 1538 during the Dissolution of the monasteries.
After being adopted as the home of the Blackfriars Theatre and the base of the Society of Apothecaries, the original building was destroyed during the Great Fire. The site is now the location of Blackfriars Station and the Blackfriars name is used for nearby road railway bridges as well as the Blackfriars Millennium Pier along the River Thames. Opened in 1869 as the William Pitt Bridge, the Blackfriars Bridge was the third crossing built to connect the banks of the Thames after the ancient London Bridge and Westminster Bridge.
