About Russell Square

Russell Square sits in Bloomsbury within the London Borough of Camden. Built by James Burton, the large garden square is close to the University of London and the British Museum. It is named for the Earls and Dukes of Bedford who share the surname Russell and developed the area and nearby lands during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Bedford Estate in Bloomsbury also includes Bedford Square, Bloomsbury Square, Gordon Square, Tavistock Square, Torrington Square and Woburn Square.

Some of Russell Square's original terraced houses still overlook the beautiful green space, particularly along the southern and western sides. On the eastern side is the Hotel Russell, an ornate building designed by Charles Fitzroy Doll and completed in 1898. The adjacent Imperial Hotel London was built in 1966.
