Old Billingsgate Market was the world's largest fish market in the nineteenth century, and the landmark building was completed in 1875. It was refurbished after the fish market relocated to the Isle of Dogs in Canary Wharf. Across from Old Billingsgate is 100 Lower Thames Street, a modern office building with views of the Thames on higher floors. Billingsgate Then and Now

A ward within the City of London, Billingsgate is bound by the River Thames in the south and Fenchurch Street and Dunster Court in the north. To the west is Lovat Lane and in the east are Mark Lane and St Dunstan's Hill. Billingsgate is named after the City's ancient water gate, which is said to have been erected by the legendary King Belinus. Until the sixteenth century, Billingsgate was home to a market that sold corn, wine and fish as well as coal, iron, salt and other general items. The famous Billingsgate Fish Market was established in 1699, although some of the items previously sold at the market continued to be traded. The market's current home was built in 1982 close to London's other financial hub in Canary Wharf. Billingsgate is also the site of Customs House, which is used by HMRC. Watermen's Hall is also found in the area. Built in 1780, it is the City's last remaining Georgian-era livery company hall.
