About Canonbury

The area sits between Essex Road, Upper Street, Cross Street, and St Paul's Road. It is named after the Canons of St Bartholomew's Priory, which was granted the land that makes up Canonbury in 1253. Canonbury was largely undeveloped until the early part of the nineteenth century. The area was one of the first in London to experience gentrification, which started in the 1950s as war-damaged and older buildings were rebuilt and restored.

Canonbury includes Regent's Canal, a busy cycling route for commuters. It is also the home of Canonbury Tower, a manor house built between 1509 and 1532. The area has also attracted several well-known writers and artists, particularly around Canonbury Square. The pretty square was developed between 1805 and 18030 and was the home of George Orwell, Samuel Phelps, Evelyn Waugh, and others.
