Commercial Road is an important link between London's two main economic and financial hubs in the City and Canary Wharf. While either end of the street provides immediate access to the city's financial markets, much of the road itself is a combination of residential and commercial developments with a mix of business activities.

About Commercial Road

Commercial Road is an important link between the City of London and Canary Wharf, two of the capital's most important financial and commercial hubs. The two-mile long artery traverses the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End. It travels from Gardiner's Corner and Aldgate East tube station to Burdett Road in Limehouse where it becomes East India Dock Road. Built between 1802 and 1806, Commercial Road provided a direct link from the West India Docks and the East India Docks to the City. Notable buildings along the street include Limehouse Town Hall and St. Anne's Limehouse.

The East London Mosque London's opened along Commercial Road in 1941, becoming the first mosque in London. It was relocated to a temporary location on Whitechapel Road in 1975 as a purpose-built mosque was built. Commercial Road crosses two of the East End's districts, Limehouse and Stepney. Limehouse Basin was one of the first of London's docks to close in the 1960s, having been a major port since medieval times. Largely unpopulated until the nineteenth century, Stepney grew from a medieval village centred on St. Dunstan's Church.
