Business on Goswell Road

Goswell Road is located within the Angel area of Islington on the northern edge of Central London. Much of the street is occupied by shops and offices. The main campus of City University is located along the road, as are the headquarters for UK operations of DB Schenker Rail and the International Medical Corps. Like Goswell Road, the area is a major commercial and retail hub.

Angel is identified as one of Greater London's major centres in the London Plan and it is a business improvement district branded as angel.london. While retail remains the main economic activity in the area, there is also strong leisure and education presence in Angel.

About Goswell Road

Within the London Borough of Islington, Goswell Road runs from the border of the City of London to Angel in Islington. The street passes through Clerkenwell and crosses Old Street. The main campus of City University London, the central library of the Society of Genealogists, the UK office of the International Medical Corps and the headquarters of DB Schenker Rail are also located on the road alongside offices and shops. Originally, the New River ran along Goswell Road.

Although there is debate about the origin of its name, Goswell Road is thought to be named after a nearby garden of Goswelle or Goderell that belonged to Robert de Ufford, 1st Earl of Suffolk during the fourteenth century. It may also refer to 'God's Well' and the tradition of well worship by pagans. It is also believed that the first four-minute mile by James Parrott in 1770 was partly run at Goswell Road in addition to Old Street and St. Leonard's in Shoreditch.
