About Horseferry Road

Horseferry Road links Millbank and Lambeth Bridge with Greycoat Place and Great Peter Street in the City of Westminster. The road's name derives from a ferry service that once connected Westminster Palace and Lambeth Palace at the site where the Lambeth Bridge now crosses the River Thames. The defunct ferry operated since at least the early sixteenth century, although river crossings may have taken place at the site during Roman times. The decline of the ferry began with the completion of Westminster Bridge and service ended when the original Lambeth Bridge was completed in 1862.

Formerly the Horseferry Road Magistrates' Court, the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court was one of the road's most notable institutions. Many extradition and terrorism-related cases were heard at the court, making it a fixture in news reports for decades. Its location close to New Scotland Yard also helped it receive several high-profile cases over the years. The court closed in 2011 and was replaced by Westminster Magistrates' Court on Marylebone Road. The street has also been the base for the Home Office, the Gas Light and Coke Company, the British Standards Institution, the Burberry Group, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and other organisations.
