About Leicester Square

Created in 1670, the square was named after Leicester House. A park has been at the centre of the pedestrianised square and was originally known as Lammas land. It was refurbished in the nineteenth century, when four statues and a fountain of William Shakespeare were added. The square was upgraded again in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games.
