Ludgate Hill is located close to Ludgate, an old city gate and gaol that was demolished in 1780. The hill sits within the City of London and is one of three ancient hills in the capital. The others are Tower Hill and Cornhill. Ludgate Hill is the home of St. Paul's Cathedral, one of London's most popular and iconic attractions. Built on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Diana, the Anglican cathedral was consecrated in 1697 and has been a fixture in London's skyline for centuries.

Ludgate Hill is also the site of Paternoster Square, the base for the London Stock Exchange. The area was once dominated by small alleys, many of which vanished with the construction of the Ludgate Hill railway station during the late 1860s. Ludgate Hill is also the name of a street that runs between St. Paul's and Ludgate Circus where it becomes Fleet Street.
