About Mortlake

Mortlake sits on the south bank of the River Thames within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The suburban district was a hub for malting, brewing, farming, and other business ventures during the Stuart and Georgian periods. Founded in 1619, the Mortlake Tapestry Works were also found in the area along the River Thames before it closed in 1703.

The former Mortlake Brewery, also known as the Stag Brewery, is a reminder of the local area's economic history. In existence since the fifteenth century, the brewery was most recently owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev. Closed in 2015, the site is being redeveloped into new housing as well as community leisure facilities, restaurants and shops. Since 1845, the finish line of the famous University Boat Races between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge has been close to Mortlake Station.
