About New Kent Road

Built in 1751, New Kent Road in the London Borough of Southwark was originally part of road improvements following the construction of Wesminster Bridge. It allowed people to move from the West End and Westminster to the south east of London without travelling across Southwark. New Kent Road runs for one kilometre or 0.6 miles from Elephant and Castle and runs east and south-east to Old Kent Road. Once known as Greenwich Road, the road is a wide and leafy boulevard that in some respects resembled Paris more than London at the time it was created. Number 26 was the home of Charlie Chaplin and a pub is named in his honour.

Another highlight along New Kent Road is The Coronet, a live music venue and nightclub on the site of the former theatres and cinemas. The road is also the site of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre and several residential blocks including Metro Central Heights and Heygate Estate. Notable buildings include the red brick Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, a former church built in Queen Anne and Romanesque revival styles. New Kent Road is part of London's Southwark district, one of the oldest parts of London.
