About Old Kent Road
Old Kent Road in South East London runs through the London Borough of Southwark and has a rich history that reflects various periods of London's evolution into a modern capital. It was originally part of an ancient Roman trackway that connected the capital with the coast. It was also known as Wæcelinga Street by the Anglo-Saxons. During the Middle Ages the route was used by pilgrims as remembered in the Canterbury Tales. It was also used by soldiers as they returned from the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.
During the sixteenth century, Old Kent Road was the site of public executions. The nineteenth century saw the arrival of industry, particularly in the area around Surrey Canal. More recently, old buildings have been redeveloped into new office and residential spaces. Like the ancient routes the preceded it, Old Kent Road continues to link Central London with the coast at Dover as part of the A2. Situated in one of the oldest parts of the capital, the street is part of London's Southwark district on the south bank of the River Thames.
