About Shaftesbury Avenue

A major street in London's West End, Shaftesbury Avenue runs from Piccadilly Circus to New Oxford Street. It passes through sections of the City of Westminster and the London Borough of Camden. Shaftesbury Avenue is named after Anthony Ashley Cooper, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, and was built during the late nineteenth century. In addition to clearing out impoverished slums in the area, the street provided a new link through the busy districts of St. Giles and Soho.

Shaftesbury Avenue sits in the heart of London's world famous theatre scene and welcomes thousands of theatregoers each night. The Apollo Theatre, Gielgud Theatre, Lyric Theatre and Queen's Theatre all sit on the road's north side of the street, while red-brick Palace Theatre is located at the intersection with Charing Cross Road at Cambridge Circus.
