Smithfield Market was originally designed by Victorian architect Sir Horace Jones during the nineteenth century, although the meat market's history dates back centuries. Public executions also took place in Smithfield during the early thirteenth century, including the execution of William Wallace and Wat Tyler. For 700 years, the area also hosted the Bartholomew Fair and other public gatherings.
