About Smithfield

Smithfield Market was originally designed by Victorian architect Sir Horace Jones during the nineteenth century, although the meat market's history dates back centuries. Located within the City of London, the historic market has been the site of livestock trade for more than 800 years. It is one of the largest and oldest meat markets in Europe. Smithfield Market and its listed buildings dominate the surrounding area that has adopted its name. Smithfield derives from the Saxon word for smooth (smeth) and means smooth plain. Before being the site of a market beginning in the Middle Ages, the grassy area was used for jousts and tournaments during the twelfth century.

Public executions also took place in Smithfield during the early thirteenth century, including the execution of William Wallace and Wat Tyler. For 700 years, the area also hosted the Bartholomew Fair and other public gatherings. More recently, Smithfield has become a cultural centre for professionals and has earned a reputation for trendy restaurants, pubs and nightclubs. Other notable sites in Smithfield are St. Bartholomew's Hospital, the Charterhouse and the twelfth century St. Bartholomew-the-Great church.
