Business in Smithfield
Trade in Smithfield has been focused on the area's historic meat market. In operation since the tenth century, Smithfield Market remains London's only wholesale market that has been continually operating since the Middle Ages. It continues to supply goods to butchers, restaurants and shops throughout Central London. The Smithfield area is also home to several high-profile City of London institutions, including St Bartholomew's Hospital and Livery Halls such as the Butchers' and Haberdashers' Companies.
Smithfield sits just north of the City's financial and legal centres, including the London Stock Exchange. As a result, businesses looking for office space in the Smithfield Market area tend to have roles in the financial or legal sector.
Office Buildings in Smithfield
Several law firms, financial services companies, and other businesses are based in offices along streets that neighbour Smithfield Market including Smithfield Street, Holborn Viaduct, Snow Hill, and others.
- Completed in 2001, Atlantic House is one of the main office developments close to Smithfield Market. The glass and metal clad building has also been clad with granite imported from India. It serves the largest office for the internal legal firm of Hogan Lovells.
- Just south of Smithfield Market is 60 Holborn Viaduct, a nine-storey curved office building. The glazed building incorporates the gatehouse for the Holborn Viaduct to create a stunning contrast. In addition to retail units and restaurants, the building also serves as the home of Amazon's 210,000 square foot London head office.
Smithfield Market was originally designed by Victorian architect Sir Horace Jones during the nineteenth century, although the meat market's history dates back centuries. Located within the City of London, the historic market has been the site of livestock trade for more than 800 years. It is one of the largest and oldest meat markets in Europe. Smithfield Market and its listed buildings dominate the surrounding area that has adopted its name. Smithfield derives from the Saxon word for smooth (smeth) and means smooth plain. Before being the site of a market beginning in the Middle Ages, the grassy area was used for jousts and tournaments during the twelfth century.
Public executions also took place in Smithfield during the early thirteenth century, including the execution of William Wallace and Wat Tyler. For 700 years, the area also hosted the Bartholomew Fair and other public gatherings. More recently, Smithfield has become a cultural centre for professionals and has earned a reputation for trendy restaurants, pubs and nightclubs. Other notable sites in Smithfield are St. Bartholomew's Hospital, the Charterhouse and the twelfth century St. Bartholomew-the-Great church.
