Business in Tower Hill

Much of Tower Hill's economy is focused on tourism thanks to the presence of major attractions including the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. There are a number of restaurants, bars and shops that cater to visitors as well as workers in the area. There are also several hotels in the Tower Hill area, including the Novotel London Tower Bridge, Grange City Hotel and The Tower Hotel. In addition to its tourism-related infrastructure, Tower Hill includes a mix of residential and commercial developments. This includes mixed development at St Katharine Docks to the east of the Tower of London and residential units at Trinity Square to the north.

There are also planned luxury residences and a Four Seasons Hotel planned for 10 Trinity Square in the former Port of London Authority Building. The America Square Conference Centre is also north of the Tower of London and adjacent to Fenchurch Street rail station.

Office Buildings in Tower Hill

Numerous offices are based in and around the Tower of London. Many are small-scale office blocks nestled along the area's medieval streets. Great Tower Street and Mincing Lane at the heart of the modern financial centre of the City of London as well as East Smithfield to the east of the Tower of London have a number of offices. The London Underwriting Centre, which serves insurance underwriters and brokers, is also located at Minster Court in Tower Hill.

The former London Corn Exchange building at 55 Mark Lane also provides office space in the area. Originally built in 1828, the building features a beautiful Greek Doric style. The remodelled interior has 6,215 square feet of modern office accommodation across six floors. Another landmark development in the area is Tower Place. Designed by Foster and Partners, the two seven-storey offices are linked by a large glazed atrium.

About Tower Hill

One of the oldest parts of London, the elevated area of Tower Hill sits north-west of the Tower of London in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It was first settled during the Bronze Age and later formed part of a Roman settlement in the capital. Tower Hill was one of London's notorious public execution sites.

Many criminals and traitors were executed on Tower Hill between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. High-profile executions included Lord Chancellor John Fisher, Anne Boleyn's brother George Boleyn and cousin Henry Howard, the Archbishop of Canterbury Simon Sudbury, Queen Jane Seymour's wife Edward Seymour, former chief minister during the reign of Henry VIII Thomas Cromwell, and many others. Only a handful of individuals were executive within the Tower of London itself, including Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey. Many executions were performed on Tower Green, where a memorial marks the exact site.
