Waterloo Then and Now

Part of the London Borough of Lambeth, Waterloo is located in the south bank of the River Thames. What is now known as Waterloo was once marshland on the outskirts of the ancient parish of Lambeth. The area was drained during the eighteenth century, making way for development in the growing capital.

Waterloo Bridge, named to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo during the Napoleonic Wars, connects the area with the Strand district of London on the north bank of the Thames. The original bridge opened in 1817, although it was replaced by the current structure in 1945.

Waterloo Road was also built at around the same time as the original bridge. With the opening of Waterloo station in 1824, the area became increasingly referred to as Waterloo. Before then, it was known as Lower Marsh. One of the busiest train stations in Europe, Waterloo station is the main railway terminus in London and a major London Underground hub.
