About Westminster Bridge

Spanning the banks of the River Thames, Westminster Bridge links the City of Westminster and the London Borough of Lambeth. The Grade II listed structure is painted in the same green colour as the seats found inside the House of Commons, which sits next to the Palace of Westminster on the northern end of the bridge. Similarly, nearby Lambeth Bridge is painted red to symbolise the colour of the seats in the House of Lords. At the south end of the bridge are the London Eye and County Hall, a complex that includes the London Sea Life Aquarium and the London Dungeon.

First proposed in 1664, the first bridge linking Westminster to the south bank of the Thames was built between 1739 and 1750. In 1862, Thomas Page designed a second bridge to replace the original crossing that was subsiding and becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. Originally made of wood, the current stone and brick bridge is the oldest road crossing on the Thames in Central London. It also accommodates foot traffic and is a popular spot for tourists looking for scenic views of some of the capital's most iconic attractions.
