Beginning in the mid-1990s, many nineteenth century warehouses and industrial buildings in the Old Street area were converted into work spaces for artists and creative businesses. About Old Street
Linking Central and East London, Old Street sits within the Clerkenwell area of the London Borough of Islington. It runs west to east from Goswell Road towards Shoreditch and the old Shoreditch Town Hall where it meets with Shoreditch High Street, Hackney Road and Kingsland Road. The eastern edge forms part of London's technology hub that is centred around the Old Street Roundabout, which is also known as the Silicon Roundabout.
As its name suggests, the thoroughfare has ancient origins and is believed to have once formed part of an old Roman road that connected Colchester and Silchester. During the twelfth century it was known as Ealdestrate and in 1373 it was recorded as Ie Oldestrete. More recently, Old Street has become a favourite for well-known graffiti artists including Banksy. Old Street and nearby Hoxton Square and Great Eastern Street also form part of the hipster haven of Hoxton, which is known for its lively night life.
