About Hoxton

Often confused with the equally trendy Shoreditch, Hoxton is a district in the East End within the London Borough of Hackney. The area is bound by Regent's Canal to the north, Wharf Road and City Road in the East, Old Street along the south, and Kingsland Road in the east. Known as Hogesdon in the Doomsday Book, the name derives from the Anglo-Saxon term for farm or fortified enclosure. Although marshy and a place of leisure during the Middle Ages, the area saw the arrival of manor houses during the Tudor period. These moated properties served as homes for ambassadors and courtiers looking to escape the city.

By the end of the seventeenth century, many of these estates were broken up and repurposed as schools, hospitals and madhouses. Slums dominated the area during the Victorian era when Hoxton also emerged as a centre for the furniture trade. More recently, Hoxton has seen its industrial buildings converted into office and exhibition spaces. It is the home of a thriving arts and entertainment scene with several restaurants, bars, clubs and art galleries. Many entertainers are linked with Hoxton. Alfred Hitchcock's began his career at Gainsborough Studios, while actors George Sewell and Lenny McLean were born in the area.
