About Farringdon

Farrington is named after its first residents and Aldermen, William de Faringdon, who purchased the land during the early part of the thirteenth century. His son, Nicholas, was appointed Lord May of London by King Edward II, a position that his father also held. The area and the family also lend their name to Farringdon Station, which was built close to Farringdon Road. Originally named Farringdon Street Station, it opened in 1863.

Built in 1737, Farringdon Street also shares the area's name. It sits above the River Fleet, the largest underground river in London. Farringdon sits between the Barbican and St Paul's Cathedral, bordered by Clerkenwell and the City. The ancient London Wall once cut across the historic area, and the divide continues to be seen in some ways between the wards of Farringdon Within and Farringdon Without. With a rich menu of restaurants and bars to choose from on any given night, the area is popular choice to live and work.
