About Clerkenwell

There is also a creative side to Clerkenwell, which is home to several architecture and design firms. Fashion designer Alexander McQueen was also based in Clerkenwell. Situated in the London Borough of Islington, the areas was known as London's Little Italy beginning in the 1850s and it remains the spiritual home of the city's Italian community. Each year, the Italian Procession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Sagra march along the streets surrounding St. Peter's Italian Church. The area's name comes from Clerks' Well on Farringdon Lane where London Parish clerks performed biblical mystery plays during the Middle Ages.

The Priory of Clerkenwell was also the base for the Knights Hospitallers, an order founded to provide medical help during the crusades. Built in 1504, St. John's Gate stands as a reminder of the areas monastic past. In Elizabethan times, Clerkenwell was known as a brothel quarter before emerging in the seventeenth century as a fashionable residential area where Oliver Cromwell, Erasmus Smith and others owned homes.
