Trade and commerce have been at the heart of Spitalfields' economy for centuries. The area includes Commercial Street and is the home of several markets. The historic Old Spitalfields Market as well as Brick Lane Market and Petticoat Lane Market are all based in the area.

In recent years, Old Spitalfields Market has been at the centre of urban renewal in the area. New office and community developments have revitalised the market and added new office and retail space to the location. The market itself remains a popular shopping destination for arts and crafts, food, fashion, and other items. Several financial institutions and businesses working within the City's finance and legal sectors are also based in the Spitalfields area given its location in the City of London's financial centre.

Office Buildings in Spitalfields

On the western edge of Old Spitalfields is Bishops Square, a commercial development owned by JP Morgan. The site retains the original market buildings on Brushfield Street, which have been incorporated into the development with the Horner Market building. It includes new shops and restaurants, a covered promenade, and 72,000 square metres of offices along with residential units and community facilities.

One Bishops Square serves as the headquarters for international law firm Allen & Overy. Immediately west of Bishops Square is 135 Bishopsgate, the London headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland, Liverpool Street Station, and other major office developments along Bishopsgate and in the Broadgate area.

Offices are also found to the east of Old Spitalfields, particularly on Hanbury Street and Commercial Street. Creative and technology businesses also find this location appealing due to its proximity to Shoreditch's tech hub in the Old Street area to the north.

About Spitalfields

A former parish in Tower Hamlets, Spitalfields straddles the edges of Central London and the East End. Situated close to Liverpool Street Station and Brick Lane, the area is home to several markets including the Old Spitalfields Market. The market was the site of a Roman cemetery during the fourth and fifth centuries and a camp for people displaced by the Great Fire of London. Spitalfields' name derives from the medieval hospital of St. Mary of the Spittle, which was also on the site of the Old Spitalfields Market.

Flesh, fowl and roots were first traded at the market in 1638 when the area sat in the rural outskirts of the capital. With the arrival of Huguenot refugees during the seventeenth century, the area also became known for its silk industry. Spitalfields is also home of the Ten Bells on Commercial Street, an infamous pub where some of Jack the Ripper's victims met. All but two of the killer's victims were murdered in Spitalfields, with the others being killed in nearby Whitechapel.
