About Angel

Angel is centred on a busy intersection in the northern end of Central London. Situated within the London Borough of Islington, the area is nestled between Clerkenwell in the south and Islington in the north. To the west is Pentonville and to the east is St Luke's.

The major commercial and retail hub is named after the old Angel Inn, which was first built in the early sixteenth century on the corner of Islington High Street and Pentonville Road. Originally known as the Sheepcote, the building was renamed to The Angel by 1614. The inn itself took its name from the Angel of the Annunciation and became a popular spot for travellers visiting London when the area was largely rural. The original building was replaced in 1820 with a new structure that served as a post house and meeting place for businesses. The N1 Centre is Angel's major retail destination with shops as well as leisure and entertainment facilities including the O2 Academy Islington and cinemas.
