About Chancery Lane
Chancery Lane sits at the western edge of the City of London within the ward of Farringdon Without. The one-way street runs from Fleet Street to High Holborn. It was originally created during the twelfth century as a new route between the old temple of the Knights Templar on the current site of the Southampton Buildings on Holborn and the present temple at Fleet Street. The street's name is taken from the historic High Court of Chancery, which operated in the area for centuries starting in 1161. Chancery Lane has long been linked to the legal profession, although other businesses have joined the mix in more recent years.
In addition to meeting at the old Temple, the High Court convened at Lincoln's Inn Old Hall and other buildings. During the fourteenth century, the Master of the Rolls established an official residence and storage for court records on Chancery Lane that eventually became the site of the precursor to the National Archives'. A Gothic Revival building replaced the original structure in 1851 and now houses the Maughan Library of King's College London. The Law Society's main building is also located at Number 113, while the oldest tailor in London is located at Number 93 and continues to provide legal dress for the capital's legal professionals.
