Originally a Roman postern and fifteenth century gate along the London Wall between Bishopsgate and Cripplegate, Moorgate is now the name of one of the City of London's major thoroughfares. Its name derives from Moorfields, a moor that surrounded the ancient gate and one of the last lands to be developed in the City.
Moorgate and other gates along London's city wall were demolished between 1761 and 1762. The street is also the birthplace of poet John Keats, who was born in 1795 at Number 199 in the former Swan and Hoop Inn close to Moorgate station. Keats' birthplace remains a pub and is now known as The John Keats at Moorgate.
The current street was built in around 1846 as a new approach for London Bridge. It links the City with the London Boroughs of Islington and Hackney from Princes Street and Lothbury, although Moorgate becomes Finsbury Pavement once it reaches Hackney.
