History of Moorgate
Originally a Roman postern and fifteenth century gate along the London Wall between Bishopsgate and Cripplegate, Moorgate is now the name of one of the City's major thoroughfares. Its name derives from Moorfields, a moor that surrounded the ancient gate and one of the last lands to be developed in the City. Moorgate and other gates along London's city wall were demolished between 1761 and 1762.
The current street was built around 1846 as a new approach to London Bridge. It links the City of London with the Boroughs of Islington and Hackney from Princes Street and Lothbury, although Moorgate becomes Finsbury Pavement once it reaches Hackney.
Moorgate is also the birthplace of poet John Keats, who was born in 1795 at Number 199 in the former Swan and Hoop Inn close to Moorgate station. Keats' birthplace remains a pub, now known as Keats at The Globe.
