Business in Brixton
Under the London Plan, Brixton is listed as one of the capital city's 35 major town centres. According to Future Brixton, there are more than 1,500 registered businesses in the district, a figure that represents 10 per cent of Lambeth's total number of businesses. Important industry sectors include retail, food and drinks, ICT, media, creative, and professional services. Brixton is known to have a higher-than-average percentage of independent businesses.
Brixton Road has been a bustling retail centre for over 100 years, particularly between Stockwell Road and Acre Lane. Other important areas of business activity include Atlantic Road, Coldharbour Lane, and Brixton Station Road.
The Brixton Business Improvement District was established in 2014 and currently has over 600 members who collaborate in developing local environment improvement projects, networking events, and green infrastructure plans.
Pivot Brixton is a similar initiative that focuses on supporting local retailers and helping them grow. The existence of a close-knit business community is not only evidenced in the creation of the BID, but also in other local initiatives like the introduction of the Brixton pound, which is currently accepted by approximately 250 Brixton-based businesses.
Efforts are being made to foster entrepreneurship in Brixton, especially among young people and first-time business owners. Business support is offered by independent projects like The Platform and also from Lambeth Council.
Office Options in Brixton
Although the local commercial property market is characterised by its affordability, there is a shortage of quality office space in Brixton. Current options include the office units at Shakespeare Business Centre (right by Loughborough Junction), the managed offices at Brixton Eurolink Unit Management (near Brixton Market), space at the Bon Marche Business Centre (with office units ranging between 100 and 700 square feet), and the flexible / short-term office space options at Impact Hub.
As part of the Brixton Masterplan, new office units will be built along Brixton Station Road, as well as flexible workspace in Somerleyton Road and near Loughborough Junction. By 2020, Lambeth Council expects to create 10,000 square metres of new office space in the areas mentioned above.
Brixton is part of the borough of Lambeth and is conveniently located between the A3 and South Circular Road, only 3 miles south of central London. Brixton is also connected to the rest of London by Underground and National Rail services. The district has a total population of just under 80,000 people and mean household income is estimated at £40,000 / year.
Brixton began to develop economically in the mid 19th century, mainly thanks to the creation of the railway line that connected what then was a middle class suburb with London and Dover.
Several large-scale regeneration projects started in the early 2000s and future developments are also planned. The most notable of these is the Brixton Central Masterplan, which consists of more than 300 projects that aim to improve housing and employment options, as well as to provide support for the development of new business opportunities, mostly in retail, entertainment, and transportation.
