Business in Greenwich

Greenwich is an historic district of south east London within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It is strategically located close to Canary Wharf, a major hub for national and internal financial services providers and banks, although the borough has a diverse business services sector. A growing cluster of IT and communications businesses is partly based in the town centre. As new office and light industrial spaces are developed in the area, IT and communications businesses are also increasingly finding homes on the Greenwich Peninsula and Woolwich.

The creative industry is another fast-growing sector in the borough. The growth of Grade A Greenwich office spaces in high street locations is attracting digital media businesses looking for affordable and modern workspaces. Clusters of creative businesses are found throughout the borough in the Digital Peninsula, the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, West Greenwich and Charlton.

Tourism and retail are also important economic drivers. Greenwich's rich cultural heritage means the area has several tourist attractions, including Maritime Greenwich, the Royal Observatory and The O2. Town centres at Greenwich, Woolwich and Eltham and retail parks at Charlton and Thamesmead are the borough's main shopping destinations.

About Greenwich

Greenwich gives its name to the Greenwich Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time. From the fifteenth century, it was the site of the Palace of Placentia. The royal palace was the birthplace of Henry VII, Elizabeth I, and other members of the House of Tudor. It was rebuilt following the English Civil War as the Royal Naval Hospital for Sailors. The landmark building became the Royal Naval College in 1873 and is now used by the University of Greenwich, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and other public uses.

Other major sights and attractions include the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, the Cutty Sark clipper ship, Greenwich Park, and numerous high street shopping districts, as well as the popular nearby areas of Canning Town, Surrey Quays and Canary Wharf. Greenwich is also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre provides information on the area's history in the Pepys Buildings on the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College.
